Orange County, CA Elections to Host Technical Redistricting Academy

Interested members of the public can sign up for free virtual technical redistricting training sessions by visiting ocvote.com/academy.

SANTA ANA, CA – July 2, 2021 – Due to the complex and technical nature of the local redistricting process, the Orange County Registrar of Voters will be hosting its inaugural Technical Redistricting Academy in two sessions on July 21st and 28th. Following the 2020 Census, district boundaries will be redrawn based on Census data to reflect population shifts as required by statute in advance of the 2022 election cycle.

As redistricting requirements and technology have changed since the last redistricting in 2010, the Academy will provide opportunities to elected officials, city and district officials, and members of the general public to understand the most current redistricting technology and best practices. Over two sessions, the Technical Redistricting Academy will cover topics such as:

•    Redistricting Orange County: Introduction to Local Redistricting
•    From Maps to Ballot Types: What Happens After the Lines are Drawn?
•    Available Resources
•    Redistricting File Preparation Best Practices

What the Technical Redistricting Academy is:

A technical review of the Registrar of Voters’ role in the redistricting process and education for technical / support staff on file preparation, election data, and GIS challenges, and to facilitate the timely submittal of boundary changes so that the office can make necessary changes and verifications that all voters are properly districted.

What the Technical Redistricting Academy is not:

This education series does not support the actual boundary changes for any specific jurisdiction, nor does it serve as a forum for the solicitation of input regarding any jurisdiction’s redistricting process. Participants will be advised that the information is not intended as a substitute for legal counsel. Participants will also be encouraged to contact jurisdictions, whose redistricting they are interested in, and will be provided with available contact information for such efforts throughout the County.

The Technical Redistricting Academy is open to all members of the public at no cost and will be conducted virtually – space is limited. Those interested in learning more, or to sign up, can visit ocvote.com/academy or call 714-567-7600.

Quote by Registrar of Voters Neal Kelley:

"The once-in-a-decade process for updating district boundaries is one that my team and I are committed to ensuring transparency and providing public education to increase the public’s understanding of redistricting in Orange County. The Academy’s materials and sessions are offered to the public in advance so they are aware of the Orange County Registrar of Voters’ internal operations and how they can prepare ahead of time if they plan on being part of the redistricting process.”

This education series, produced by the Registrar of Voters, does not support the actual boundary changes for any specific jurisdiction, nor does it serve as a forum for the solicitation of input regarding any jurisdiction’s redistricting process.
